The Role of Faith in Healing – A Physical Therapist's Perspective

As a physical therapist specializing in chronic pain and pelvic health, I have witnessed first-hand how the integration of faith, particularly faith in Jesus Christ, can profoundly complement the physical healing processes. For many, especially among my clients who are Catholic or Christian new mothers and pregnant women, this blend of spiritual and physical care not only enhances their recovery but also provides deep personal comfort and strength.

Understanding the Interplay between Faith and Physical Therapy

Faith can be a powerful tool in the healing process. Our understanding of pain science is constantly evolving, and in recent years has come to acknowledge the influence of mental, emotional, environmental, and even spiritual factors. However, there is a natural breakdown that occurs in offering pain management in a secular healthcare model in its inability to offer an avenue for spiritual healing when necessary. Thus, when faith is coupled with the science of physical therapy, it can help manage not only the physical aspects of recovery but also the emotional and spiritual challenges that often accompany conditions like chronic pain and pelvic health issues.

Here are several ways that faith positively influences healing:

1. Enhanced Coping Strategies

Faith in Christ offers a reservoir of hope and peace, which can be particularly beneficial for patients enduring long-term pain. Trusting in a higher plan helps mitigate the stress that often exacerbates symptoms of chronic conditions.

2. Increased Pain Tolerance

Studies suggest that prayer can increase pain tolerance by activating brain regions associated with calming and soothing. This spiritual practice can serve as a potent adjunct to conventional pain management techniques.

3. Community and Support

Being part of a faith community provides emotional and sometimes physical support, which is crucial during recovery. The prayers and practical help from church members reinforce not only the spirit, but also aid physical recovery.

4. Positive Outlook

Faith instills a positive mindset, which is a key component in the rehabilitation process. A hopeful outlook can significantly influence recovery outcomes, as it encourages active participation in physical therapy sessions and adherence to prescribed exercises.

5. Prayer as Meditation

Prayer can be a form of meditation that reduces stress levels and improves the neurophysiological functions that govern health. For many mothers dealing with pelvic health issues, prayer offers a moment of peace amidst the chaos of motherhood.

Saints and Spiritual Insights on Healing

Historically, the Church has recognized the role of various saints in healing. Saint Gianna Beretta Molla, a physician and mother, is a poignant example for those suffering from pelvic health issues. She epitomizes the sacrificial love inherent in motherhood and medicine. Her famous quote, "Love is the most beautiful sentiment the Lord has put into the soul of men and women," highlights the holistic approach to healing—balancing physical treatment with loving spiritual care.

Saint Peregrine, the patron saint of those suffering from serious illnesses, is often called upon by those dealing with chronic pain. His miraculous healing from cancer is an inspiring story for those facing seemingly insurmountable health challenges.

These two examples are not a painted picture of the past, or exclusive to the holiest of all souls. God is still at work today, with miracles occurring across the world every single day! He implored us, “Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks, receives; and the one who seeks, finds; and to the one who knocks, the door will be opened” (Matt 7:7-8). We are not afraid to ask God for His miraculous, healing hand to come to our assistance.

Integrating Faith in Physical Therapy Practices

Incorporating faith into physical therapy doesn't mean substituting scientific methods with prayer and hope; rather, it augments these methods with spiritual care. Encouraging faith as part of the healing process can provide a more rounded and grounded treatment approach, especially appreciated by those who hold their religious beliefs close.

Historical Context on Pelvic Health

Historically, pelvic health has been a neglected area in women's health, only gaining significant attention in recent decades. Understanding the anatomy and functionality of the pelvic floor has been crucial for treating and managing conditions that affect a significant number of women post-childbirth. Integrating faith-based support with this understanding enhances the care model, offering a comprehensive approach that respects both the physical and spiritual dimensions of healing.

Conclusion

For many Catholic and Christian patients, especially new and expectant mothers dealing with chronic pain or pelvic issues, faith is not just a part of their lives—it's a part of their healing. As a physical therapist, I have witnessed that acknowledging and integrating this faith into treatment protocols not only enhances the therapeutic relationship but also supports the holistic healing that many of our patients seek. This respectful incorporation of faith into physical health management can lead to more complete and meaningful recoveries, demonstrating that indeed, "The prayer of faith will save the sick" (James 5:15).
